Scented oils, perfumes and other fragrances have been adorned by people since early civilization. A perfume can be seen as an accessory that completes a look, especially if you’re dressing up. But when it comes to wear a fragrance, some people like to stick to a particular scent. They enjoy one perfume in particular and like being associated with it which is marked as their ‘Signature perfume/scent’. So basically, a Signature scent is the fragrance that you’ve chosen to represent ‘you’ or one that you like the best.

On the contrary, there are people, who like to change their fragrances according to their mood, clothing, and style. If you’re one of them you know you can be easily bored with just one type of fragrance. I know I can 😀 That is because, a person’s likes and dislikes change from moment to moment. Just like our taste in foods and clothing changes as we age, our fragrance preferences will most likely to change as well.

How to Find Your Signature Scent

Now if you’re the one who really wants to have a Signature scent, here are few tips and tricks that can really help you finding one. Please keep reading.

*Initially, if you don’t really have an idea of what you like, then smell everything. Give each fragrance its own proper shot. Your olfactory bulb gets affected after sniffing few different fragrances. Give it a break by limiting your explorations to sniffing only three scents per visit. Start with lighter scents first.

*Request a sample of the fragrance you liked most at one time and spray it on yourself, as body chemistry can affect how a fragrance smells. For more clarity, when you’re trying a fragrance, put it on your wrists or between your elbow. Check in every 20 minutes or hour to see if you like it.

*Try to understand what you are smelling. Make yourself aware of various scent categories. For instance:

Musk: Musk is a clean-laundry scent.
Citrusy: Anything Lime, lemon, oranges.
Woody: These scents can range from a creamy-nutty flavor to sandalwood to spicy.
Floral: Florals encompass everything from white florals (Gardenia, Lilies, Ylang-ylang etc.), to roses, to violets, to peonies.
Oriental: It can be slightly powdery with a hint of spice or sweetness. Just think of incense sticks, for instance.

*Another important aspect of choosing a perfume is the understanding of ‘Fragrance   notes’. Overall, there are three note scales that when blended together create the perfume’s fragrant accord. Each of these levels, however, has its own primary purpose.

Top/Head Notes: These are generally the lightest of all the notes. They are recognized immediately upon application of the perfume. The top notes are also the first to fade.

Middle/Heart Notes: The middle notes make an appearance once the top notes evaporate. They last longer than the top notes and have a strong influence on the base notes to come.

Base Notes: The base notes are the final fragrance notes that appear once the top notes are completely evaporated. The base notes mingle with the middle notes to create the full body of the fragrance, but are typically associated with the dry-down period. The job of the base notes is to provide the lasting impression and linger on the skin for hours.

Cheaper fragrances tend to have top notes that are initially very, very strong. Whereas more expensive fragrances have the complexity of a heart (middle note) and dry down, thus tend to have long staying power. That is the reason why some fragrances cost $30 and some cost $300.

*One other important factor of a fragrance is the ‘concentration’. There is a difference of concentration and dosage between an ‘eau de toilette’ and an ‘eau de parfum’. The eau de parfum is more concentrated of the two. eau de toilette, on the other hand, is a bit more fresh and light. Eau de toilette fragrances develop quicker whereas eau de parfum takes time.

*Scents smell different on everyone. To make sure you’re getting the true scent, put it directly on your skin. Every scent could actually have a different chemistry depending on your skin type. How you smell something can be very different than how someone else smells the same thing.  You may be sensitive to woody scent but your friend, on the other hand, may love it completely!

  12. This is such an informative post! I’ve always wanted to be the type of girl with a signature scent, but I can never commit to one. I especially love floral toned scents, so I’m going to have to search around for one I like the best. Also I never actually understood base or middle or top notes, so it was nice to read an explanation! Great post 🙂

  14. Cute shapes. How I wish I could also have a smell of these scents. I agree with you that most people don’t really have an idea of what scent they prefer as long as it is good, they pick it up and buy, this is sooo mee. haha thanks for sharing this
