Silicone Makeup Sponge: Yay or Nay

If you are a trend-stalker like me then you must’ve heard or read about this weird makeup trend by now! And if not, then don’t worry at all. You have come to the right place.

Please continue reading to find out what this current hottest makeup trend is?

Although the beauty blenders have been the biggest thing recently, the next big beauty trend is already popular in the makeup community. It is a ‘Silicon sponge’… yes a sponge to apply makeup, which possibly is made of silicone. It is also known as ‘Silisponge’ which appearance-wise looks a lot like a breast-lifting bra insert. You’ve got to be kidding me! Right? 😀 I know that was my first reaction too.

This trend is all over the internet these days whether Youtube or Instagram. Everyone is raving about this makeup application tool. I, personally didn’t use this (weird) thing on my face yet but people who have already used it shared some benefits of this makeup application tool over the beauty blenders.

According to them:

1. This see-through, patty-like tool has a non-porous silicone surface (made out of silicone and encapsulated in a super-flexible material called thermoplastic polyurethane) that won’t soak in your foundation, highlighter, or cream blush. That means, because of its smooth texture, you don’t have to use as much product, so no more wastage of products while makeup application.

2. This sponge works best with liquid base products on dry skin. It costs about $5-$10. It is way easier to clean. All you have to do is to rinse it off with soap and water and you’re done!

3. It lasts longer than a makeup sponge; just replace it when it starts to look weathered. But unfortunately the beauty blenders should be replaced after a few weeks or months (depends on the quality) of use.

4. The silicone sponge is the safer option for your skin because of softer texture. Although the beauty blenders are said to be antimicrobial, the beauty blenders still has pores and can absorb anything that is small enough to get in. When you are dabbing that makeup onto your skin your pores are open which means you may also be dabbing any germs and bacteria that is sitting on and hiding inside of the sponge. The silicone sponge on the other hand is non-porous and it’s made of silicone. Nothing can be absorbed and it can easily be cleaned.

The only limitation the makeup community could see until now is in terms of blending. Even though the silicone sponge gives you full coverage, the beauty blender provides better flexibility by getting in those hard to reach corners like around the eye area which is little difficult to achieve with the silicone sponges. Thus, the entire makeup community has given the green signal to use this sponge on your skin!

I haven’t tried this makeup application tool yet. Have you? What do you think about it? Whatever it is, please share your experience. Would love to know more about it. 🙂

Hope y’all have a happy weekend and Happy month of March! See you soon in the next post.

Until then…
